A  Seminar to Discuss Results of the Road Safety Project

Journalists are cordially invited:

What? Seminar

When? Friday, 9 December at 10:30 am

Where?               Road Police Inspectorate Lukyanivskaya 62,  Kyiv

A seminar to analyse the results on two road safety campaigns will be held tomorrow at the Headquarters of the Ukrainian Road Police Inspectorate on Lukyanivskaya 62. The information campaigns were carried out in partnership between EU experts of the Integration of Ukraine in the Trans-European Network Project, Odessa County Administration and the Road Police Inspectorate.

Two information campaigns urging the drivers to wear seat belts and to cut speed that were carried out this summer in Odessa County, resulted in 30% reduction of deaths in the road accidents. This outcome was achieved by a relatively small investment into the information dissemination effort on the social media networks and a robust action of the Ukrainian traffic police.

A documentary film titled “20 Minutes about Life and Death” that was produced by a young Ukrainian film director Vitalij Yorin will be shown at the seminar. The film is available for a free download at http://ten-t.org.ua/ua/107.htm.

Road safety remains a pressing issue in Ukraine. Some 140,000 people were killed in the road accidents since country’s independence and another 900,000 wounded or handicapped. Although during the last four years the rate of the accidents is decreasing, more than 4,600 people were killed in Ukraine last year.

The pilot project aim of the project was to show that a remarkable improvement could be achieved with relatively modest financial resources, but considerably improving coordination of the work of the designated personnel in charge of the road traffic and safety.
